CONGRATULATIONS
RAT TERRIER BREEDERS

Your breed is now being listed on the CHIC data base. This is a huge kudos for you. If your Rattie meets the criteria as per CHIC (Canine Health Information Center) and the ARTA suggestions, you will recive a CHIC number.

This is how I understand it, but as usual you should check the CHIC website to double check me but this how "I" have perceived it.

ARTA's members voted on the most prevalent health issues our breed has and the ones that we should test for. In hopes that we can identify the carriers to breed away form these problems and to hopefully prevent them in the future. These test are, Patella, LCP, Hip Dysphasia and Cardiac. If you have tested your dog for all these test, if your dog has a permanent identification i.e. tattoos or microchip and if the results have been submited to OFA you will then receive a CHIC number. A number that show's your dog has met the criteria recommended by our parent club. There are more test that can be done and they too will be listed. These just happen to be the ones the parent club vote to be the most prevalent. This cost no more other than submitting your test results to OFA.

For more information you can go to the CHIC link listed below, OFA (link listed below), e-mail me (listed at the top of this site), ask ARTA (linked below) or ask on the breeders board.

AGAIN congratulation!! This is just one more step to improving an already great little dog.

Available Test and Ages For OFA Certification

Patellas: Can be tested and certified with OFA as early as 1 year.
Cardiac: Can be done and certified as early as 1 year.
Hip/Elbow: X-Rays prelims can be done before 24 months but 24 months to be certified.
LCP:Can be done at 1 year. You can do this when you do your Hip X-rays but it is a seperate form and it can be sent in with x-rays for Hip Dysplasia.
BAER: Puppies as young as 6 weeks of age can be successfully tested IF they can remain still long enough for an unadulterated reading (they cannot be held and tested at the same time).
CERF: Can be done at any age but suppose to be repeated every year.
PennHIP: Can be done as early as 16 weeks but most vets prefer that one wait until one year. OFA is the same for Hips (as a prelim) you can x-ray a pup at 16 weeks certification at 24 months.

Regimen Of Testing & Re-certification Recommended
by Some Breeders

CERF: Yearly re-certification.
Hips/Elbows: Are one time if done after 24 months of age and certified.
Patellas: Yearly re-certification or before breeding.
Cardiac: Murmurs can develop so I would say every two - three years while a dog is in their breeding years.

I would like to thank the breeders for their recommendations on their testing regimen.

Litter Rates
= 3 or more members of the same litter, submitted together

Kennel Rates = a group of 5 or more individuals, owned/co-owned by the same person, submitted together

* = Equivocal and Affected dogs no charge. Resubmit studies no charge

** = Evaluation fees for dogs determined by the OFA to be affected will be refunded. If the dog has an existing hip dysplasia certification, a Legg-Calve-Perthes certification is at no charge upon the submission of the Legg-Calve-Perthes from Hip Dysplasia Number form.

***The OFA does not charge a fee to enter abnormal SA results (the fee is refunded to the owner), or to enter resubmit results on previously tested clear or equivocal dogs. A number of owners have assumed that the OFA policy not to charge on resubmits applies to the labs as well. This is not the case. Please note, the laboratories/ dermapathologists charge a fee every time they process a new sample.  Please consult the lab prior to submission for their current fees.

Deafness note: The OFA will continue to register BAER Hearing Test Results for whole Dalmatian litters at no charge through the end of 2006. The fees are being underwritten through a generous grant from the Dalmatian Club of America Foundation.

Helpful Hints

Kathleen's Pumpkin Diet

Equal parts of the following mixed to cooked oatmeal consistancy.
  • Canned pumpkin (plain and cheap)
  • Baby Rice ceral
  • Pedi-lite plain
  • Canned dog food

Mix together until moist not runny. The pumpkin provides fiber and stops runns, the baby rice absorbes acid that up sets tummies, pedi lite replaces the electrolites and canned food provides protein. You can use baby food meat if the tummy is really upset.

Works within 12 to 24 hours to stop tummy and gastric upsets.

Puppy Supplement

  • 1 10 oz. can of evaporated milk (must be evaporated)
  • 2.3 oz sterilized water
  • 1 raw egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon regular mayonaise
  • 1 cup whole plain yogurt
  • 1 adult vitamin with calcium, disolved

Mix ingredients, warm to body temperature before feeding, and discard in 7 days. ( mine never lasted 7 days)
I substituted Miracle whip for regular mayonaise, because the puppies liked the sweeter taste. It mixes up better than regular mayonaise too, but if you don't use a blender it can be somewhat lumpy with either one. When I ran out of yogurt and couldn't get to the store, I substituted 1/2 cup of Miracle whip for the yogurt. The pups still got the calcium/vitamin D they require from the vitamin.
You can substitute goat's milk for evaporated milk, and do not add the additional water. I've never tried it, but I know some say it works very well.
This is all in addition to the mother's milk, and all pups got the colostrum they needed in the first few days. I'm not sure how well it would work as a stand alone milk supplement.
