This is about our Boo, about testing and how we learned some tough lessons. We hope whoever reads this can lean form us and skip the hard knocks we took/take.

Boo, was KnD's first dog that we ever tested and he is our first experience with patella luxation.
KnD did not always test our breeding dogs. We have made our share of mistakes, but, had we NOT ever tested that would have been the biggest mistake we could have ever made. We could have kept breeding dogs with issues and never have known it.
We could have kept our heads in a hole in the sand, but, it would not have meant that our dogs had no problems.

Every year KnD gets scrutinized because of Boo, this one dog. We are always asked about him, this one dog in particular. We get e-mails from people who think they are clever and undetected. We know who they are. They can use fake names, get friends and family to send e-mails to us for them, BUT, we know who the real writer is behind the scenes.

I will tell Boo's story here, once and only once. From now on any and all who want to know about him will be referred to this web page.

Like I said, we did not always test. We were learning and trying to improve and decided that testing was best for us and our beloved Rat Terriers. If we were going to breed we wanted to do it right and not just make puppies. Boo was to be our first testing. We had big plans for Boo. We could have and would have bred him over and over if we had not decided to test.

We are not the breeders of Boo. In fact Boo came to us via another breeder around the age of 5. We used Boo twice as a breeder, once intentionally and once was an oops (an unplanned litter) prior to deciding to test him.

Boo seemed as healthy as any other dog and ran faster then most here with NO visable problems. So, imagine our shock when we were told he had grade 2 patellae. Remember, we were new to testing as Boo was our first and we did not fully understand the importance of testing nor did we know the importance of submitting them to OFA for a public listing. Hence the test were not submitted.

Boo was neutered 20 seconds after diagnosis, that very moment. He has not nor will he ever be bred with again. KnD made the right decission to test and the right decision to fix Boo. No regrets. The decision was late but final.

This is as public as it's gonna get folks. Deal with it. We still have Boo here with us to this day. He is living out his life with us as a KnD kid. He is happy, healthy and loved.

We have dogs from Boo that we acquired when he belonged to his previous owner and they have all tested normal and his grand babies that we have tested normal as well. He has some great gandbabies that have questionable patellae. Is it genetic? Could be. But it does not matter where your dogs come from they still all need to be tested. As we get further generations away from Boo and we remove effected dogs as we go we ARE purifying his lines. That is WHY we test. We NOW know what we are working with. Do you?

KnD has became testing breeders and advocates for testing. We have tested every dog that was still here on our place and that we have ever bred with and every dog since then BEFORE they were bred. The results are ALL on OFA for public reading. How many others can say the same? Testing breeders are a minority. Although some breeders are learning as are the general public.
We all, breeders and buyers need to get wiser!!
Do not take a breeders word that they have tested. Ask to see proof.
Ask if they are on the OFA data base and ask to see them.

Patellae and CHD (Canine Hip Dysplasia) are real issues with Rat Terries. How big of an issue? Who knows, we suspect that more go unsubmitted to OFA than are. As well as LCP (Leggs Calve Perth). At the time of creating this web page KnD has the ONLY Rat Terrier listed on OFA with LCP KnD's Wunda From Down Unda. There is one other testing breeder that will openly discus her experiance with LCP. If you wish to know who contact us and we will talk about it.

Please understand, all dogs on OFA with issues that we have tested and posted on OFA have ALL been altered!!! They are not used as breeding stock as some would have you think and believe.

KnD are new breeders. We bred our first litter in 2001. We are one breeder and we are talking about 1 dog. How many have been breeders and have bred for YEARS with dogs that have issues? How many have been pumping out puppy after puppy from dogs with issues? Simply because they don't test. They do not know the problems.... or do they?

People want to cast stones at us over 1 dog. Maybe they best start looking at the big picture. Maybe they best worry about what is in their yard and kennel. Many are breeding dogs that are not tested and are from untested stock, YET, they STILL want to watch us and govern our program. If they want to be involved in our breeding program, there is poop to pick up and bills to pay.
Write checks out to KnD ....lol
